March 16, 2018
This week we began writing poems in our poetry unit. The students worked through writing Acrostic, alliteration, Cinquain and Colour poems. It was good to see their creative sides come out in their writing.
We are continuing to read "One For The Murphy's" as a class. The students seem to be enjoying this book so far and are becoming invested in our main character, Carley.
Next week we will continue working on writing poetry. Students will need a duo tang to put their completed work in, within the next week or two. Many students already have one of these in their lockers, but if they don't, they will need to get one.
March 11, 2018
We will begin writing our own original poems this week. On Tuesday and Thursday we will look at the first four types of poems and write our own. At the bottom of the post is the breakdown of the four poems we will look at accompanied with examples. Students will complete acrostic, alphabet alliteration, cinquian, and color poems. We will also take 40 minutes of class time on Friday to do our weekly quiet reading.

March 7, 2018
All three classes have started the poetry unit this week. They are working through a few activities this week, putting figurative language to use. We will also be doing reading comprehension tomorrow. Students who are in the play are reminded to swing by the class room and pick up what they are missing this week.

Just a reminder that all three classes will be writing the unit exam for Fatty Legs tomorrow. Students have been given class time to review.
All three classes will be starting the poetry unit as of next week.

This week we continued to work through our "Fatty Legs" novel study. We will do the same next week.
Students seem to be enjoying the book and we have been able to have some really good conversations regarding residential schools.\, because of this.
All classes are continuing to work through Fatty Legs this week and next week. All classes are also beginning to read a novel called "One For The Murphy's".
Just a reminder that the ELA Part B midterm will be on Thursday, January 25th.
January 12, 2018
This week all classes started a short novel study on the book called "Fatty Legs". This book is about a young girl's experience in a Residential School.
The book lines up quite well with our Social Studies curriculum and students seem to be enjoying it so far.
7HD students finished The Boy in The Striped Pajamas. They are welcome to take the AR quiz on this book now. We will be watching the movie next week.
December 15, 2017
This week all three classes worked to finished up their stories. The students must hand in their stories by the end of day Tuesday. No exceptions will be made.
December 8, 2017
Students are finishing up their rough drafts of their stories as we head in to the early part of next week. All classes need to have their rough drafts edited and be ready to start typing their good copies on Tuesday of next week. They will have 2-3 classes to type up their stories.
7KE and 7MR are approaching the end of the novel "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". Both classes will be watching the movie the week prior to Christmas, provided the behavior in the class warrants this privilege. Depending on how much reading we get in over the next two weeks, 7HD may be watching the movie after the Christmas break. All three classes seem to really be interested in the story and we have had some great conversations regarding the events of this time period. All students will have the opportunity to take the AR test on the novel, once we have finished the story.
December 4, 2017
All three classes are continuing to read the novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, at the beginning of class each day.
Students are continuing to work on writing their Christmas Short Stories. This week they are working towards completing their rough drafts and editing their work.
November 24, 2017
This week we finished up The Fiction Mix Unit and students wrote their unit exam. I was really impressed with how well students did and it was clear to see that they had spent time preparing. They should be very proud of themselves!
I also introduced our next assignment this week. Students will be writing a Christmas themed short story. They will have the choice of 3 writing prompts on which to base their stories. The assignment can be found by following this link:
This assignment will take us till Christmas to complete. Students seemed very excited about this and I am really looking forward to hearing their stories.
November 17, 2017
This week we worked on commas, dialogue and read our last story in this unit. Students will receive the study guide for this unit in class either Monday or Tuesday of next week. All class will write the test for this unit on Thursday. The test will be made up of matching, multiple choice and a few questions where they will need to provide an example of the literary term provided.
November 9, 2017
This was a short week in LA, due to the two days students have off. We read the story "For Pete's Snake" and worked on plot diagrams and reading comprehension for the story.
Next week we will look at comma usage and have a very short quiz on commas. Students will do an activity before the quiz, to help them practice.
We will also read the last story in our short story unit, "All is Calm". We then will cover how to use dialogue in a story and review for our Unit Exam. The Unit Exam will take place the week of the 20th. Students will receive a study guide, once the date is set.
November 2, 2017
This week all three classes worked on a peer editing and peer grading assignment. We also looked at sentence structure, sentence fragments, and common and proper nouns.
Next week we will be reading a story titled "For Pete's Snake" and learning how to construct a plot diagram.
October 27, 2017
This week we continued on with the story, "Zoo". Students did a few different activities with this, including a peer evaluation. Next week we will do a Halloween LA activity, as well as carry on with the next story.
Just a reminder that marks will be cut off for reports cards as of next Friday.
October 18, 2017
This week students completed a poster on a social issue of their choice. Marks should be up by the end of day on Thursday. They also did an activity on homophones and dashes, and two reading comprehension assignments. Next week they will be working through a short story called "Zoo", and will do a number of activities with the story.
October 13, 2017
This week students were working through a story called "Geraldine Moore; The Poet". This story really gets students thinking about the people in our community who are affected by poverty. We had a class discussion on social issues, and the specific issues that affect our community. Next week students will be creating posters that will bring awareness to social issues in our community.
Students should be working towards meeting their Accelerated Reader goals, as we have now passed the half way mark of Term #1.
7KE and 7MR: Friendly Letters have been marked and grades are updated. 7KE has been given their marked letters back, 7MR will get theirs back next week.
This week students also received back their marked Hockey Sweater assignments. These marks have been posted in PowerSchool.
October 5, 2017
This week all three classes started the first story in our Fiction Mix unit, The Hockey Sweater. We will continue working through this unit when we return next Wednesday.
Just a reminder that all students should be reading a minimum of 40 minutes per week at home.
All grades are up to date as of this morning.

This week the students in 7KE and 7MR completed their introductory Friendly Letters. Most students have already handed them in, however they are due no later than Tuesday, October 3rd, if they have not done so yet. These classes will start The Fiction Mix Unit next week, where they will explore several different short stories.
This week 7HD started The Fiction Mix Unit. They will continue with this unit for about the next 5-6 weeks. Students are not able to take the textbooks we use home, as we only have one class set and multiple classes using it at this time. They are able to come in before school, at lunch or after school should they need more time with the textbooks. Students will just need to set up some time with me to do so.

This week students started working on an assignment called The Best Part of Me. Students are to take a picture of their best part. The writing portion of the assignment will be completed in class. I can'i wait to see what everyone has come up with :)

Both LA classes are off to a great start. Parents should have already received an LA Course Outline to sign and return. Additionally, there will be an information sheet on Accelerated Reader coming home today.
If you have not had a chance to sign up for Remind 101, I would ask tat you please do so whenever you get a chance. I use this to relay important information with both students and parents.
