Grade 7 Social Studies
Please find below the link to the Grade 7 Social Studies Program of Studies. This is the objectives laid out by the province as to what will be taught through the course of the year. We will be using the textbook Voices and Visions: A Story of Canada to cover these objectives. We will also add to this resource through other mediums throughout the course.
Social 7 Textbook PDF
The first part of the year will be spent studying the First Nations groups who played an important role in the beginning of Canada. Specifically we will study The Haudenosaunee, The Mi`kmaq and The Anishinabe. This introductory unit is called `Canada Before Confederation` and should take us up until Christmas to complete.
We will work through the information in each chapter by exploring the people invovled, the vocabulary as well as any important events that took place. Assessments will be in a variety of formative and summative assignments.

This week we started chapter 10. Students will be completing a group project as the major assignment for this chapter.
April 24, 2018
The Chapter 9 Unit Test will be on Monday, April 30th. Students will receive the study guides either this Wednesday or Friday.
April 13, 2018
This week both classes finished up with chapter 8 and began working through chapter 9. They will be making a Flip Book, which will hold key concepts from the chapter. These are really fun to make and the students always seem to enjoy it.
March 28, 2017
Both classes are now finished the content of Chapter 8: The Metis. They will be writing their test on Wednesday, April 11th, and they already have their study guides for this exam. We will review the Monday that we are back.
In the next chapter we will be making flip books to house all of our content. STUDENTS WILL NEED TO HAVE SCISSORS AND GLUE.

This week students finished up chapter 7 by writing the exam, and got a start on the next chapter. Chapter 8 focuses on the Metis people and their role in the development of Western Canada.

This week students will begin work on their chapter 8 unit workbook- the link to this document is at the bottom of this post. We will read textbook pages 168-179 and complete the first three pages of the workbook. At the bottom of the third page there are 6 major events to be summarized; this week we will only complete the four events that include up to page 179 (Reaction to Colonist, Conflict Over Resources, Battle of Seven Oaks, Migration Further West). We will not complete Ruperts Land Joins Canada or Fears of Assimilation until next week.

Students are currently working through an independent study for Chapter 7. This chapter is completed through a set of questions, so that those who are involved with the production can work at their own pace, while still being able to keep up with the class.
The exam for this chapter will be on Wed. March 14th.

Both classes spent this week working on their Board Games. These are due on Monday, NO EXCEPTIONS!! Classes will be playing these games in class on Monday, so they have to be completed. Students have had a total of 7 classes ( almost 5 hours!) to work on these.
The CHAPTER 6 TEST will be on Friday, February 16th. Student will be given time in class on Wednesday to study, as well as a study guide at that point.

Both classes are currently working on their group projects, which is creating board games based on the content from chapter 6. They will continue working on these into next week.
Just a reminder that he Social midterm will be on Friday, January 26th.

Chapter 6 will mostly be completed through a group project. Wednesday's class will be spent reading through the chapter and highlighting key points. Here are the notes students will be receiving in Wednesday's class.

This week students have worked to finish up Chapter 5. They have a timeline project that is due on Monday, as well as their test. They have been given time to study this week, as well as time to work on these timelines. They will need to spend additional time studying over the weekend, in order to be well prepared.
We will begin on Chapter 6 after the exam on Monday.
Each student was given a study guide in class today. The link below will also take them to the study guide. Just a reminder that only students can access any google docs, from their Holy Spirit accounts, as that is the safety settings put in place.

This week we finished the test for Chapter 4 and started taking a look at chapter 5. We will continue working through Chapter 5 until the Christmas break.

As of today we will be finished Chapter 4. Students will spend today working on their study guides to help them prepare for their exam.

This week we will be finishing up chapter 4 and our unit on Google Classroom. Students will be writing the Chapter 4 test on Monday, December 11th. They will be getting their study guides through Google Classroom this week.

This week students started working through the self guided Chapter 4. They are completing assignments in google classroom as of right now, however there are a couple of cut and paste assignments with this unit as well.

This week we finished up chapter 3. Students also had the chance to join the Google Classroom for this course. Chapter 4 will be completed in Google Classroom where students will have the opportunity to work on a computer to complete their work. We will set due dates for the assignments as we go along, as to ensure students have enough time to complete them well. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own devices for this unit.

This week we explored the influence of British colonization on the Beothuk people. We also will be taking a look at the British explorers involved in the colonization of North America. Below you can find a link to an Explorers Summary. Next week we will begin preparing for our chapter exam on Monday and write the exam on Wednesday.

This week students took a look at the land that was known as the 13 Colonies, through the completion of a map. They also studied the affects of colonization on the Beothuk people and began to look at the British colonization of Atlantic Canada.
We will continue to work through chapter 3 next week.

This week students finished up both the Chapter 2 Project as well as the exam. Students did very well on this test, and it was very clear that they had made a valiant effort to prepare.
We have now started chapter 3, which is the British in North America. The first two assignments for this chapter are completed, marked and marks are posted in PowerSchool. We will continue with chapter 3 next week.

This week students continued working through the second chapter, looking at how France worked to expand its colony. Next week students will take a look at the Sovereign Council and Imperialism, as we work towards the end of the chapter. Students can expect their chapter test to be the week of the 23rd.

This week we will be finishing up chapter 4. On Wednesday, December 13th students will be writing the Chapter 4 test. They will be getting their study guides this week.

This week we will be wrapping up chapter 3. On Monday, November 20th we will be reviewing and preparing for our exam that we will write on Wednesday, November 22nd.

We will be moving on to chapter 4 where students investigate the relationships among the groups involved in the fur trade. They will explore the roles of the First nations, Canadiens, British, and Metis as well discover how the quest for furs led to the opening of the continent and laid the foundations of the Canadian economy.

Last weeks trading cards project was a success! Students were eager to trade with one another and seemed to really enjoy it! Well done EVERYONE!
In addition, we have now started working through chapter 3. In this chapter, students investigate the movement of British peoples to North America, the growth of British colonies, and the laying of British foundations in Canada. We will also look at the role of mercantilism in Britain's colonies and examine the early relationships among the First Nations, the French, and the British.

This week we will be wrapping up chapter 2 with a Trading Card project. This activity allows for the students to learn/reinforce note-taking, categorizing, summarizing and content knowledge and to develop describing and questioning skills. The Trading Card project will be due Monday, October 30th at Tee Time, so that I may photocopy each student's set of card to trade with classmates during class that day.
In addition, the Chapter 2 Test will be on Wednesday, November 1st. Students received a study guide this past Monday.

Students are working through the first chapter. We can expect to be writing the test for this Chapter on September 27th. Next week students will work on a comparison chart, looking at the similarities and differences between the three First Nations groups we have been studying, as well as a small chapter project. Students will also be given a study guide to help them prepare for the first test. I will hand out a copy to each student next week and it can also be found below.

This week 7MR was able to finish up the first chapter on Aboriginal Societies. They also got a start on the second unit of study, which is The French in North America. We took some wonderful tableau photos of the students which we will use for a project at the end of the chapter. Please stop in and take a look if you happen to be in the school. Next week we will continue working through the second chapter.
